New York: Simon & Schuster. This is the next-to-last novel from the prolific pen of McBain, who died in 2005. It features Alice Glendenning, a 34-year-old widow struggling to maintain a normal life for her children since the death of her husband eight months ago in a boating accident. Alice has recently taken a job as a real estate agent to help make ends meet when one day her children don't come home from school and she receives a phone call from a woman claiming to have kidnapped them and demanding a ransom the same amount as what she's expecting from the insurance agency for her husband's accident. About 5 5/8 x 8 3/8 inches, 277 pages in black paper-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. Dustjacket's front panel show's woman's high heeled leg in shadows behind title and author (title in grey, author in blue) in large letters. Back panel has full-panel, full-color head-and-shoulders photo of McBain. Book is clean, complete and unmarked. No significant damage or flaws. Boards show only minimal wear at spine ends, slight soiling on top edge of text. Dj shows only very minor edgewear. . Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 2005.
