FIRST EDITION (1887), small 4to, 235 x 185 mm, 9¼ x 7 inches, cloth backed cream boards with coloured illustration of 3 children watching a cuckoo clock, coloured vignette of small child lying in a meadow on lower cover, floral endpapers, 64 pages. Chromolitho frontispiece, title page and 21 very pretty chromolitho plates of young children all by Harriet M. Bennett. Numerous very pretty sepia text illustrations, some full page, also by her. Spine cloth slightly rubbed, corners very slightly worn, a few small light scratches to upper cover, lower cover a little dusty, free endpapers slightly browned, red ink inscription to front pastedown (see image), small split to endpaper fold at lower edge, half-title lightly foxed, some margins lightly marked or faintly foxed, otherwise contents very nice, 3 inner joints cracked, binding tight and sound.
