Newbury-Port, Massachusetts: John Mycall, 1777. [24] pages. 12mo. Drake, Almanacs of the United States3271; Evans, American Bibliography 15306; ESTC W37172. Daniel George was only 18 years old when he wrote this almanac, which was one of a series that he wrote and had published in various Massachusetts towns between 1775 and 1787. In his first almanac, he was described as "a student in astronomy at Haverhill," who "has been a cripple from his infancy." Most of the almanac is a calendar "courts, Judgements of the weather, &c.--one of the latter is a note on the anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill. The front cover has an engraving of the Solar System, which is the subject of a 3-page article within. The last 4 pages list The "houses of entertainment" (i.e. taverns and inns), with names of their owners, that were located on the roads between Boston and various towns and cities in the United States (most were in New England). The almanac is string-tied, and the currently unused stab-holes suggest that the remaining string is either a residue of the original or a later incomplete substitution. The almanac is in remarkably good condition: generally clean, with minor speckling limited to the blank margins of the covers; some edgewear from thumbing of the fore-edge, but no tears; one tiny spot on front cover, but no significant staining.. First Edition. Paperback. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.
