The author, a Times newspaper journalist, won a travelling fellowship in the United States and was invited 'to look for America'. He travelled in 38 of the 50 states, from the Canadian border to the edge of Mexico, from Empire State to Golden Gate, travelled mountains, desert, prairie, canyons, rivers, lakes, forests, cities and sleepy hollows, by car, mule, canoe, bus, train, tram and plane. For part of his exploration he was in the company of ten other journalists, Argentinian, Brazilian, Cameroonian, Ecuadorian, Hong Kong Chinese, Israeli, Japanese, Swedish, Tanzanian and Thai.
