About This Item

Unmarked pages. Edge-wear and some light yellowing to cover, as well as some general shelf-wear. Remains of former price sticker on inside front cover. Introduction by Klaus Mann. In Kafka's first but unfinished novel, the Statue of Liberty is described as holding a sword aloft. That image is implicit here in Gilda Kuhlman's cover design featuring a photograph by Rondal Partridge, but it appears Lady Liberty's violence is ultimately self-inflicted, her sword coming back to rive her in two. Really nice New Directions Paperbook with lots of Emlen Etting illustrations, which shamelessly bring out the book's gay subtext. 299 pp.

Synopsis

Karl Rossman has been banished by his parents to America, following a family scandal. There, with unquenchable optimism, he throws himself into the strange experiences that lie before him as he slowly makes his way into the interior of the great continent.Although Kafka's first novel (begun in 1911 and never finished), can be read as a menacing allegory of modern life, it is also infused with a quite un-Kafkaesque blitheness and sunniness, brought to life in this lyrical translation that returns to the original manuscript of the book.
