About This Item

London: Printed by T. Spilsbury for W. Herbert and sold by J. Millan, T. Payne, Davis and Reymers et al, 1768. Very Good condition. Moderate corner wear. Hinges are partially cracked, but holding. SEE PHOTOS. Marbled endpapers with gilt inner dentelles. SEE PHOTOS. This is the 1768 Second Edition, which according to the title page should have 73 copper plates. This copy has none, and there is no evidence that it ever did. It does have the "Author's Epitaph" and "Directions to the Binder" which are lacking in some other copies. A previous owner has attached to the front free endpaper 6 descriptions of the book clipped from various bookseller catalogues. Pages are otherwise crisp, clean and unmarked. NO dampstains. NO tears. Almost NO foxing. The binding is full brown leather, elaborately gilt decorated. It appears to have been rebacked at some point, retaining the original backstrip. It had 5 raised bands on the spine, but one has since perished. SEE PHOTOS. There is a signature dated 1864 at the top of the title page, possibly a "John Hitchman." SEE PHOTOS. According to the 1881 Census, there was a John Hitchman, born 1835 in Longford, Gloucestershire, and in 1881 living in West Ham, London, Essex. This is an oversize volume that measures 16.75" tall by 11" wide by about 2" thick. It is very heavy and will require SUBSTANTIAL postage, charged at our cost, depending on destination. . Second Edition. Oversize Hardcover. Very Good condition. x, 452pp. + 6 page index. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
