First published in 1862, this is a fourth edition of this popular work, which examines British art and society during the early eighteenth century and provided valuable material on the era.Written by Horace Walpole (1717-1797), a man of letters, writer and art historian. His other works include his letters, which have been in print for centuries, fictions pieces such as 'The Castle of Otranto' and 'Hieroglyphic Tales', and history works such as 'Historic Doubts on the Life and Reign of King Richard III'.Based on the notebooks of George Vertue (1684-1756), an English engraver and antiquary. Horace Walpole bought these notebooks after Vertue's death.The final volume is a catalogue of engravers active in England according to Vertue's notebooks.A fourth edition bound in contemporary leather.Complete in five volumes.With the armorial bookplate of John Clarke, Esq. in each volume. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally bright but a bit worn, with the spines in particular rather rubbed, and extremities a little bumped.
