About This Item
xi+436 pages with maps, tables, charts, figures, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's red cloth with silver lettering in black label to spine and cover in original jacket. Foreword by Ruth Landes. First edition. This book provides a detailed scholarly account of life-ways of five diverse populations of northern Minnesota Chippewa in the latter half of the 1969s. The six authors-all field workers in the same research project-have combined traditional ethnohistorical and ethnographic methods with the use of sampling and quantitative data. Their articles include the first full ethnographic description of the only community of Chippewa Peyotists in Minnesota, and analyses of several phenomena in American Indian studies: the Chippewa role in the modern day wild rice industry; political activism in a racially mixed reservation town, and its implications for the question of Ojibwa "individualism"; the enthohistorical development and modern social significance of Chippewa powwows; a successful community development effort through organization and cooperation; and the many faceted adaptations to city life of Chippewa Indians living in a small off-reservation urban center. The studies present a balanced view of both the distinctive and the non-distinctive characteristics of modern Chippewa people, emphasizing variation within and among the groups studied instead of attempting a "typical" description. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket.
