About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1949. A fine copy, a few letters on spine rubbed; jacket with 1/4-inch and smaller nicks/chips along edges. 8vo. Frontispiece portrait of the author. 60 pages. Original black cloth; printed dust jacket, with $2.50 price intact. First edition, first printing (F-Y on copyright page) of the author's second book. Inspired by the epic poetry of Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid, 'Annie Allen' tells the story of a Black Chicago girl who grows into womanhood and motherhood. In 1950, 'Annie Allen' won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, making Brooks the first African American to win a Pulitzer in any category.
