Library book plate on inside front cover. Title page displays a large woodcut device. Pages are clean overall with occasional spotting and age toning; faint inscription above title page device; outer margin of pp.735-6 reinforced with contemporary paper. Fore edge of the text block is a bit rubbed. The bottom edge is stamped with a library name. Board corner tips neatly repaired. Johann Van der Waeyen (1639-1701) was a Frisian Minister, scholar and controversialist. In 1677 he was forced to leave his position in Middelburg and move to Franeker. [See M'Clintock, Cyclopaedia of Biblical Lit.] Among his better known works is a commentary on Balthasar Bekker's book on witchcraft. Bound in full contemporary vellum over boards, morocco spine label, gilt, red sprinkled edges. Front end affixed to pastedown, small marginal fragment torn from K8, repair to short tear at T7. One woodcut with two holes. Some light internal foxing, toning. A very good copy. The Epistles and Gospels to be read throughout the year, according to the Church services. Originally written by the Jesuit Petrus Canisius (although only the Translators are mentioned in the title). Remigio's real name was Remigio Nannini. He was born in Florence c. 1521. Ratramnus was a 9th-century Frankish monk who served the Corbie Monastery. Ratramnus was a Carolingian theologian who is primarily remembered for his work 'On the Body and Blood of the Lord'. This book was a direct response to Paschasius Radbertus's treatise of a similar title which described the elements of the Lord's Supper, or Eucharist as it pertains to the blood of Christ. Ratramnus argued that the elements did not physically change property, that they remained bread and wine and did not become Jesus's blood and flesh – a debate which has lingered for centuries within the Catholic Church.

Title page, dedication leaf, pp 506, (ii), with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table, (slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate), a little age-toning generally, endpapers unevenly browned, but otherwise very clean internally, bound in full contemporary polished calf, slight wear at the corners, joints cracking slightly, lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. [The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate, but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor, in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work. Illustrated with three engraved folding plates, an engraved portrait, one engraving within the text, small thick octavo, pp xiii, (i), 499, (i), title to the Catalogus Stirpium, v, (i), 115, with the errata leaf, lacking the title page which is supplied in an old-style photo copy, the plates are a little browned and creased and one is splitting along the fold, some age-toning and signs of use throughout, signs of damp damage to the lower margins throughout, with some pages frayed and flaking, (very slight loss of text to about fifteen pages), bound in a recent very simple full calf, no title to the spine. The front endpaper bears a label identifying this copy as from the cookery collection of John Hodgkin FLS. A scarce edition - an early note on the endpaper, possibly by Hodgkin, comments that it is not mentioned in the bibliographies of Drexel or Vicaire. [John Hodgkin FLS was born in Birmingham in 1857, the son of John Eliot Hodgkin and Sarah Ransome. In 1881, he was living with his parents in Richmond, Surrey and working as an analyst for a medical firm. In 1889 he married Grace Stock and they had three sons.
