About This Item

Philadelphia: Apollo Orchestra, 1917. Near Fine. [4] p.; 18 cm. Folded card with front cover illustration printed in blue. Program for the closing public rehearsal of the 1916-1917 season on May 6, 1917, at 715 N. Broad St., Philadelphia. "Invitation Rehearsal" -- on front. An illustration of an American flag and the lyrics to The Star-Spangled Banner are on the back. Conducted by J. W. F. Leman. Founded in 1870, according to the front cover, the orchestra consisted of professional musicians, music students, and amateurs. This program included soprano Jennie Kneedler Johnson, and violinists Samuel Belov and Josel Belov, who were also members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The conductor, J. W. F. Leman, also conducted at this time the West Philadelphia Orchestral Society. Later he conducted the Steel Pier Orchestra in Atlantic City in the 1920s; the Women's Symhony Orchestra, and the Civic Symphony Orchestra (created by the Federal Music Project of the Works Progress Administration) in the 1930s; and the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra from 1941 to 1952. He also was a violinist with the Philadelphia orchestra under Leopold Stokowski. In Near Fine Condition: lightly creasde along lower edges; clean and bright.
