About This Item
Florentiae: Per Haeredes Philippi Iuntae, 1522. Small Octavo. 2nd illustrated edition. This title lacks two leaves of the preliminaries, and the title page (here, the half-title and title page had been nicely restored in manuscript). It also lacks the frontispiece and Frontius' treatise, De Aquaeductibus [24 leaves]. The present copy has 192 leaves, and [18] leaves which includes the colophon dated 1522 and printer's device, the text contains all the 140 engravings, some leaves misnumbered, woodcuts from the Vitruvius' 1513 pocket version. The quire K is incorrectly signed I as in several copies. Deep insight into aesthetic matters is well expressed by Prof. William A. Armstrong in one of his recent reviews stressing his knowledge of the manufacture and use of colors as well as of architecture, machinery, signs of the zodiac, arithmetic, drawing, music, optics, and history. (Renaissance Quarterly, XXIII, No. 3, p. 335). Copies of the 1522 version are moderately scarce and even defective copies seldom come up at auction. Bound in a later 19th century brown cloth binding backed in calf, lettered and decorated in gilt, toning to the outer margins of about 40 leaves at front, first few leaves have fragile outer edges. Bookplate of bibliophile Sol Eisen of Canada who pioneered the first Canadian Jewish Conference in 1919.
