About This Item
Philadelphia: Childs & Peterson, 1856. Hardcover. Complete 2-volume set. 8vo. Blind-embossed green cloth. Frontispieces, engraved title pages, extensive illustrations ("Illustrated by Upwards of Three Hundred Engravings, from Sketches by the Author"), two foldout maps. Good plus. Bindings a bit rough and edgeworn, corners bumped, some chipping at heads and tails of spines, sporadic foxing, but tight and overall a quite decent set. First edition of this famed failed journey by the American explorer and physician (1820-57) which searched the Arctic for the English explorer (1786-1847) who died searching for the Northwest Passage -- but a rousing success in another sense, for they explored further and longer than previous Arctic expeditions and survived to tell the tale despite suffering horrific hardships.
