About This Item

New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1926. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9.5" by 6.5". Not Stated. A colourful first edition describing the author's ocean expedition to the Galapagos, from the library of author Paul Gallico. Beebe's second expedition to the Galapagos was travelled in the steam yacht Arcturus, which was kitted out with cages and tanks for live specimens, as well as the means to preserve dead ones and a darkroom enabling them to develop film and study bioluminescent animals.Written by William Beebe, an American naturalist, explorer and author held as being a founder of the field of ecology and an important figure in conservation. From Paul Gallico's library; with his ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Paul Gallico was an American novelist best known for 'The Snow Goose' and 'The Poseidon Adventure'.A first edition, first impression.Illustrated with wonderful bright endpapers, eight plates in colour complete with descriptive tissue-guards, and figures from photographs and diagrams in monochrome throughout. Collated, complete.A remarkable example of this fascinating and colourful exploration of the oceans. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart; extremities are a little bumped, with some paint to the head of the spine and occasionally to the boards. Ownership inscription of Paul Gallico to the front endpaper and blank. Internally, binding is generally firm, with the front hinge strained after the front blank but firm. Pages are bright and clean.
