About This Item
Venezia: Novelle del. Ap. Antonio Zatta e Figli, 1790. First Italian printing. Large copper engraving depicting the arrival of Cook in Tahiti, probably intended to show his first voyage there. The British vessel is at the left, and Cook and other British sailors are at the center, having just stepped ashore. A chieftain and local men, women and children are at the right, welcoming the British by waving palm fronds in the air. This view of Cook's arrival is unique, different from all the views published at the time.
The title in Italian and French below the image. The engraving lightly toned. Image size 14 3/4 x 12 3/4", laid down on early paper, 19 1/2 x 15 3/4". National Library of New Zealand, Reference Number: C-036-006.
