About This Item
St. Louis: Printed by the author and Lyman Mason at the Mound City Press, 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo. 39pp. Loyd Haberly binding of full scarlet morocco with gilt design of circles interlaced, with other tools and dots. Top edge gilt. Gilt titles to spine, green patterned endpapers, printed in Paradiso font on pure rag paper with titles in red and black, and red headers and numbering. With 14 vignette illustrations by Habery and handcoloured by him. Loyd Haberly (1896-1981) was an American poet, illustrator, printer, binder and educator. He started the Seven Acres Press while studying in England, and then later served for the Gregynog Press before moving back to the United States. Haberly produced 35 limited editions for which he was the author, illustrator, printer and binder. This copy of Artemis is a lovely example of the continued influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly in fine bookmaking, at a time when that was not the leading style. A few little nicks and specks to the rear cover, else a fine copy of a rare book.
