First Edition, first printing (with "A" on copyright page), SIGNED by the author, in unclipped original dust jacket. Clean rust cloth boards with black lettering on cover and spine. No bumping or wear. Binding is tight and square, hinges are sound. Inscribed and signed by author on front free endpaper: "For Mrs. F. R. Kellogg With the author's best wishes - Chard Powers Smith - October 23 - 1939." All pages are clean, with rose red top-stained upper page edges. 853 pages. Dust jacket is clean, not price clipped (2.75 on front inside flap), has edge wear and light rubbing, small corner chips, short closed tears; photo and bio of author on rear panel; enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. A novel set in a New York State town in the 1850's, when the drift away from the farms began and the old agricultural America was changing, moving toward business and industry. The eternal conflict between the materialist and the idealist fills the story as it moves toward a climactic scene on the battlefield of Gettysburg..
