[San Francisco]: The Sodality of the Friends of Crime, 1978. Poster. 11x17 inch poster, pinholes at corners, otherwise minor wear with a couple of spots. In his essay "A History Not Hidden, Just Untold," Allan Graubard states that this poster was written by Burghardt in the wake of the Jonestown suicides and posted around San Francisco in October 1978. The name of the issuer is, of course, a tip of the hat to the Marquis de Sade. "From silver hammers tapping the putrescent heads of dead Popes to the rather ingenious liquidation of a sect; one must agree, to borrow a rather overworked cliche - 1978 was a very good year. We are not seeking to raise the dead nor add our voices to the insufferable drone of bad magicians, weeping over the loss of a few Christians; the only condolence we offer is laughter. But given the mass character of the psychosis which plunged almost a thousand beings to their deaths in Guyana (a scathing denunciation of administered reality in bourgeois 'paradise) it is necessary to repeat again what must become generally known -atheism is the only solution to the question of God...
