About This Item
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Joannem Janssonium, 1659. Paperback. Very Good. 5.5" by 3.5". None. A scarce mid seventeenth century collection of six satires of the Roman poet Persius, with commentary from classicist John Bond. A scarce work, here in the original Latin. Collated, complete. This work contains six satires from the Roman poet Aulus Persius Flaccus, known as Persius. In his works, poems and satires, he demonstrated a Stoic philosophy and strong criticism for what he considered to be the stylistic abuses of his poetic contemporaries. This volume also contains a six page index of words to the rear, and the posthumous commentaries of John Bond. An English physician and classical scholar, Bond served twice as a Member of Parliament. This work first appeared in print in 1614, two years after his death. In the original paper vellum binding. Smart, with small mark to front board, and shelf wear to spine head and tail. Front hinge slightly strained but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound, though slightly strained in places. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, but generally clean with only occasional contemporary notations. Very Good
