About This Item

London, Warne & Co., 1868.. FIRST EDITION 1868 (date printed on title page), 4to, 270 x 230 mm, 10½ x 9 inches, red cloth, blind stamped and gilt decorated to upper cover, ornate central gilt panel, another for spine title, all edges gilt, pages linen mounted. 24 very good colour plates printed by 'Kronheim and Dalziels' for 4 stories: Sing a Song o' Sixpence, The Robin's Christmas Eve, Robin Hood and his Merry Men (13 images on 6 plates) and The Sea Side (11 images on 6 plates). Old amateur repair to 5 mm (½") of cloth at head and tail of spine, spine edges and corners slightly worn, 2 small splits to upper hinge neatly glued, dark stain to lower cover 70 x 90 mm, (3½" x 3"), front and rear inner paper hinges partly cracked, binding firm. Occasional pencil scribble to blanks, most erased, text pages slightly browned, occasionally quite foxed. Inscription dated 1869 on front endpaper. A good plus tight copy. Although the plates of The Sea Side are in the autumnal colours typical of Kronheim the images are delightful: children's fun on holiday: donkey rides, sailing or swimming, listening to the Ethiopian Serenaders, watching fisher-folk. The Robin Hood item is a series of little episodes including the weddings of Robin and Allan-a-Dale, ending with Robin's death. Laura Valentine was the general editor of Warne & Co. and possibly wrote some of the verses (see Osborne I,84). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST.
