This work as a whole deals with western New York prior to settlement; is largely based on documentary sources, and testifies to much painstaking research. The second volume describes the terrible winter of 1779-1780, remarks of early visitors to the Seneca village at Buffalo Creek, the first school-house, teachers, preachers, churches, names of purchasers of lots, the War of 1812, British vessels captured under the guns of Fort Erie, capture of Fort George, disaster at Stony Creek, burning of Buffalo, and many previously unpublished documents comprising narratives, letters, journals, deeds, Canadian papers, speeches of Corn Planter and Red Jacket, a list of American prisoners taken at Black Rock, and many War of 1812-era articles from the Buffalo Gazette.
