About This Item

Norwalk, CT: Heritage Press. Near Fine. 1979. Hardcover. Franklin completed his memoirs shortly before his death in 1790, but did not have a chance to oversee the publication of his manuscript. The first pirated version appeared in France in 1790, and other versions have appeared since. This edition is nicely illustrated with over sixty line drawings by William Sharp, some are full and some are double page drawings. Includes the 4 page Sandglass provided to subscribers. Oringinal blue cloth publisher's covers are in very nice condition; there is a trace of wear to the gilt spine lettering as well as to Franklin's outline in the front (which is odd, because this book appears to have never been read). The white slipcase is also in very nice condtion virtually no sign of wear (just a hint of sunning to part of one side. This is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings. This book will make a handsome addition to any library. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 233 pages .

Synopsis

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of autobiography ever written.
