About This Item

Amsterdam, Paris, Rollin, Bauche, 1758. *** First edition of this Enlightenment novel of manners. Jean François de Bastide (Marseille, 1724 -1798), writer and journalist, was one of what Robert Darnton has called the literary underground of the Old Regime. Riddled with debt and constantly in search of a protector, he dreamed of making a career in the aura of the "philosophes", and particularly prided himself on his friendship with d'Alembert. He is quoted by Rousseau at the beginning of his "Confessions", and spent at least one time in the Bastille prison. In his second marriage, he married a "girl widely known for her gallantry". Victoire Ponty was a poor, orphaned girl. She became lady-in-waiting to a marquise in Paris. She assists her mistress in her love life, then is on the point of marrying herself in "pity" to a baron, and so on... This work is oddly rare today. The Ccfr only lists the BNF copy. A second edition was published the following year under the title "Le triomphe de l'amitié, ou Les aventures de mademoiselle Victoire Ponty". Corners and head of cap worn, beginning of crack at upper hinge, otherwise a good copy. Worldcat in US: University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and Vanderbilt University Library. - -.
