Illustrated with 76 illustrations in the text wood-engraved after Arthur Hughes. Early US Issue. Similar to the First American Issue but lacking the "A. S." on the spine near the anchor. Bound in original orange pebbled pictorial cloth stamped in black and gilt. All edges gilt. Yellow endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate on the reverse of the front board, Previous owner's name inscribed on the FFEP and the date 1873 printed at the top of the right corner of the FFEP. Extremities of the boards rubbed, spine ends bumped and scuffed. Foxing present ot the endpaper. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid. The author's most famous book, a cornerstone in any fairy tale collection, and a high spot of Victorian children's literature, with excellent illustrations by MacDonald's good friend the famous Pre-Raphaelite Arthur Hughes. A Victorian fairy tale that has enchanted readers for more than a hundred years: the magical story of Diamond, the son of a poor coachman, who is swept away by the North Wind-a radiant, maternal spirit with long, flowing hair-and whose life is transformed by a brief glimpse of the beautiful country "at the back of the north wind." Synopsis

George MacDonald (1824—1905) was a prolific writer, yet it is his fantasies for children that have survived. A minister of the Congregational church, MacDonald resigned after a disagreement with his deacons and from 1853 earned his living by lecturing and writing.
