About This Item
[Bamberg, Buch- und Kunst-Druckerei, J. Nagengast, 1938]., 1938. Three parts in 2 Volumes (complete). 4tos. Frontispiece photograph of Adolf Hitler, "Der Ehrenbürger der Stadt Bamberg." 176 pp., printed rectos only. Illustrated with B & W photographs (approx. 40 pp.); 92 pp., printed rectos only. Illustrated throughout with tables. Both volumes are in the original illustrated letterpress printed (in black Volume One and in black and red Volume Two) stiff white textured wrappers, unprinted white cloth tape spines. The text in both volumes is mimeograph printed on very inexpensive acidic stock which has significantly browned and is quite fragile; the front-matter and section dividers in both volumes is printed on better stock. The photographs are printed on white coated non-acidic paper. Text in German. Volume One: I. Teil: Politische Rückschau. [Political Review]. (NOTE: English translations in brackets are mine.) II. Teil: Die Leistungen der Stadtverwaltung in den Jahren 1933/1937. [The services of the municipal administration in the years 1933/1937.] The black and white photographs, some full page and others two or three per page, depict German National Socialist party gatherings, both large and small (most in full uniform) in Bamberg, party officials, and historical/cultural sites of the city. Some of the officials identified in the photographs include: Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Bauschen, Lorenz Zahneisen, Hans Schemmer and Georg Metzner. Volume Two: III. Teil: Bamberg in Zahlen. [Bamberg in Numbers]. This Volume, profusely illustrated with tables most of which span the five year period, contains: A) Stadtgebiet [City]; B) Bevölkerung [Population]; C) Bautätigkeit und Wohnungswesen [Construction and Housing]; D) Handel und Gewerbe [Commerce and Industry]; E) Landwirtschaft und Viehhaltung [Agriculture and Livestock]; F) Märkte, Schlachtungen und Verbrauch [Markets, Slaughter and Consumption]; G) Preise und Löhne [Prices and Wages]; H) Verkehr [Traffic]; J) Arbeitsmarkt und Wohlfahrtswesen [Labor Market and Welfare System]; K) Gesundheitswesen [Healthcare]; L) Offentliche Sicherheit und Reinlichkeit [Public Safety and Sanitation]; M) Schulen, Bildungs- und Kirchenwesen [Schools, Eduction and Churches]; N) Geld- und Kreditwesen [Money and Banking]; O) Stadthaushalt und städt. Personalwesen [City Budget and City Human Resources]; P) Naturverhältnisse [Natural Conditions]. The covers of both volumes have small tears along the cloth spine and on the rear cover of Volume One, small area abrasions (sticker removal?) bottom of front covers, but overall quite clean and the binding is tight. Volume Two has an ink signature/name stamped twice front cover (more on this shortly). The text block of Volume One has very small chips on the corners of the fore edge and a small edge tear on approx. 1/4 of the pages on the fore edge from a scratch; some small edge tears. None of the conditions affect either the text or the photographs. Volume Two, which comprises the statistical compilations, has small chips top fore edge of text block on pages 4-17 and larger chips (approx. 1" x 3/4") and a 1" tear the top fore edge of pages 56-92. Once again, these conditions do no affect the text. There is a purple ink signature/name stamp with the name Fr. (? perhaps Friedrich) Wenninger or Werninger in the following places: Volume One: front free endpaper (multiple times), title page (twice), and on the majority of photographs but, perhaps significantly, not on the frontispiece photograph of Hitler. Volume Two: twice on the cover. My speculation about the signature stamp is that it was either from a contemporary Nazi party official at publication or a censor immediately after the war when this, and thousands of other Nazi publications, were banned by various organizations in Soviet East Germany. A rare set.. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Good.
