About This Item
University Press Of Kentucky, 1999. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Fine(some foxing to the edges of the text block). Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. xii + 495 pages, with index. Illustrated with black and white photographs. First printing. The six year period following the end of World War II was a pivotal one in the hsitory of major league baseball. Fans at home and soldiers returning from overseas hungered to resume their love affair with the game that was far and away the most popular, the NBA in its infancy and the NFL decades from its rise to dominence. Outstanding players like Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Bob Feller, and Warren Spahn returned to the playing field. The most important action of the period, however, was the breaking of the color barrier with the entrance of Jackie Robinson in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, soon followed by men like Larry Doby, Don Newcombe and others.
