He made a life-long collection of Far Eastern art, especially Chinese ceramics and jade, and Japanese porcelain, lacquer ware, netsuke, sword ornaments, prints and textiles. Shortly before he died in 1951, this Swiss connoisseur of Eastern art made over his collection to a foundation which bears his name. The collection is now on view in a Geneva townhouse. These four volumes are a general catalogue of the collections of Chinese ceramics by Mr. John Ayers, Deputy Keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum at the time of the publication. Each volume covers the following: Volume I: T'ang and Sung, Volume II: Ming, Volume III: Ch'ing (Monochrome and glazed porcelains) and Volume IV: Ch'ing (Painted and polychrome porcelains)..
