About This Item

Zurich, Switzerland: Baur Au Lac Hotel, 1965. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Offered is an original wine catalogue, printed by Baumann-Druck, Schoftland (Aargau) for the international luxury hotel Baur au lac, on the shores of Lake Zurich in Switzerland, founded in 1844 by Johannes Baur and still held by the Baur family to this day (Kracht). Printed on quality, heavy creme-colored stock, the catalogue measures 7-7/8" by 11" and contains 21 unbound leaves (hence 42 pages, complete), including front and rear covers (with narrow spiral binding holes along the left side of each page) along with outer protective covers. The text is in French. No date, but circa 1960s to 1970s given the price charged per glass of wine (see below). With the embossed insignia of Baur au lac Hotel to the front cover, the interior pages contain a list of over 500 select wines and spirits by name (often with year bottled), wine or spirits maker, and price, in Swiss francs, for one glass or price per glass for two. The menu also contains several La Region des vins (with maps), Principales Regions des vins (with large map of western Europe), information on La Temperature des vines and Ordre de Degustation. The first inside page contains the table of contents by type of wine or spirits (Notre Cave - Our Cellar). Here are a few examples of the price, per glass, of various wines which led me to broadly estimate the catalogue circa 1960s to 1970s: [5. 1946 - Rauschling - Stafner Sternhalde - Eidg. Vers.-Anstalt, Wadenswil - 4.50]; [120. 1945 - Cortaillod - A. Porret - 7.-]; [221. 1934 - Chateau Margaux - Margaux - 12.-]; [306 - 1924 - Chateau d'Yquem MC - Lur-Saluces - 30.-]; [437 - 1875 - Tokajer Aszu - 'King of old Tokaj-Wines' - 35.-]. Condition: the 21 unbound leaves (42 pages) that comprise the complete wine list are in Fine condition; the outer protective covers show wear and chips (but well-served their purpose in protecting the wine list over the years)..
