About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1895. Hardcover. Very Good. On March 2. 1895, THE SPECTATOR, a London news magazine still in print today, reviewed this book, noting that, ""The Scotch peasantry have never lacked those among their own countrymen who could describe and appreciate them....."" Between the covers, the reader ""will find ..a collection of stories dealing with the various episodes in the lives of the people belonging to the Parish of Drumtochty."" The reviewer concludes that ""No one can lay down this book....without feeling that...he has ..been brought within sound of that ""Virgilian cry - The sense of tears in mortal things."" Copyright 1894, Title Page: 1895. A small volume measuring approximately 6 1/4"" tall x 3 3/4"" wide x 1"" thick in very good condition. Beige boards with green line drawings on front cover, corresponding decoratives on spine, with title and author lettered on both front and spine. Shows shelf and edge wear, with age toning and dust dulling. Interior text block clean & tight; no writing or markings. Between front pastedown and front free endpaper and correspondingly on rear, the white of the paper is age toned unevenly, as if an envelope or perhaps a bookmark had at one time been been left there too long. Several small indents on endpapers where something else might have been laid in - causing ""dots"" no bigger than 1/8"" and not enough to tear the heavyweight paper. Between the front free endpaper and the title page is a page containing the Publisher's list of ""New Books by Ian Maclaren"" on both sides of the sheet. 218 numbered pages comprise the body of the stories. Concludes with approx 29 pages of advertisements for other books from the Publisher.
