About This Item

Sotheby & Co., London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 26th- 27th November, 1973. Printed wrappers, small 4to,. 156 pp, numerous plates (including some folding). Lots 2222-2541. From the introduction: "The present catalogue introduces the first sale of the new series of printed books from the Phillipps collection... A few lots may be singled out for special mention: the only known copy of a broadside with ballads by Nicholas Breton and Thomas Deloney; the fine and complete copy of the 1532 Chaucer in seventeenth-century calf (lot 2383); the first edition of Endimion and Phoebe, perhaps one of only two complete copies to survive (lot 2446); the copy of Matthew's Bible, 1537, from which the Evesham Abbey were singing the Magnificat at Evensong on 20th January, 1539 when the royal commissioners interrupted the service to expel the monks and appropriate the monastic buildings and property; the leaves of copy for an edition of James I's verse translation of the Psalms, marked up by the printer and with corrections, one of a handful of examples of Elizabethan or Stuart printer's copy to have been identified (lot 2497); and the copy of Henri Estienne's Discourse upon the lyfe of Katherine de Medicis, 1575, presented by Susannah Hall, who as residuary legatee with her husband under her father's will would have inherited his books at New Place - a volume therefore which perhaps brings us as near as we are ever likely to get to Shakespeare's library (lot 2511). Stamp on front wrapper, pages 92-93 duststained, otherwise Good.

We specialize chiefly in "books about books", the emphasis being on historical aspects of book collecting, production and distribution. A particular speciality is in bibliographies, of all subjects of interest to collectors, dealers and scholars, with several thousand bibliography titles in stock. Other strengths include extensive holdings of auction catalogues for book sales and a good selction of reference material on and facsimiles of illuminated manuscripts. We also have a special interest in rare material by or about Rudyard Kipling.
