The second English edition of Lowell's poetry collection The Biglow Papers, with hand-coloured plates by Cruikshank. The second English edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with additional notes and an enlarged glossary.Ink inscription to the front free end paper, dated 1865. Illustrated with three hand-coloured plates designed and etched by the notable British caricaturist and book illustrator George Cruikshank, who illustrated many works by Charles Dickens. Collated, complete. James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was a poet, critic, and editor associated with the "Fireside Poets". This group of New England writers were among the first American poets to rival the popularity of British poets. In this collection, Lowell has compiled nine humourous poems suitable for family reading around the fireside. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, sound, with fading to the spine and some staining to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd handling mark. Very Good
