Pages are fresh and crisp. 8.75" wide by 11.25" tall. First Edition. Limited to 3,000 copies. Tells the true story of Franklin Murphy, veteran of the 13th New Jersey Volunteers. Murphy survived some of the Civil War's most ferocious battles, returned home to a career as a successful industrialist and, in 1901, become New Jersey's Governor. The book is lavishly illustrated with maps, document facsimiles, and Civil War photographs, most previously unpublished. This is must reading for Civil War enthusiasts due, in part, to the multitude of unusual and at times highly personal observations on the conflicts. Bibliographical references. Index. Bound in the original off-white boards with a brown cloth spine, lettered in shiny gold. From the Dust Jacket: "The major thrust of this book is Murphy's Civil War experience. Drawing on newly discovered sources that include Murphy's diaries, letters, and other private papers… At the conclusion of their spotty training, the 13th Regiment was sent to Arlington, outside Washington, DC, to construct earthworks and rifle pits. Shortly thereafter they went into action in the bloody battle of Antietam, followed by the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
