About This Item
London: J. Almon. Poor. 1764. First Edition. Hardcover. Boards detached; spine with chips & one inch loss middle plus a quarter inch loss at top. Horizontal wrinkle across title and text pages, otherwise overall clean. ; Quarter brown leather and boards; author signed in ink C. Churchill on title page. Laid in is what appears to be a holograph poem of 13 lines on a paper scrap, a pastoral on Pan, signed E. Carlyon, 1799. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 28 pages; Among the subject of Churchill's satire, actors of the London stage were often the subject of his ridicule. Here he seems to reserve his bile for any person 'to the manner born' a Lord. "Wealth all his worth, and title all his fame, Lives on another man, himself a blank, Thankless he lives, or must some grandsire thankFor smuggled honours, and ill-gotten pelf; A bard owes all to Nature, and himself. " .
