Campbell's (1902) "A Biographical History, with Portraits, of Prominent Men of the Great West" notes that the Senn Collection was a major donation to the Newberry, and "the most valuable portion of them constituted at one time the library of the celebrated Dr William Baum, late professor of surgery in the University of Gottingen and one of the founders of the German Congress of Surgeons.
