Bixby Canyon in Big Sur had a significant impression on many of the Beats, for some more pleasant than others. Henry Miller wrote his memoir Big Sur and the Oranges of Heironymous Bosch (1957) about his life in Big Sur, Brautigan's first published novel was A Confederate General from Big Sur, and Kerouac's Big Sur (1965) records his nightmarish stay in Lawrence Ferlinghetti's cabin under the Bixby Canyon bridge. Emil White was a long-time friend and personal secretary to Miller, and later founded the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur. Large octavo. Original red cloth, front cover lettered in gilt with pictorial sea view to centre, brown endpapers. With photographs by William Webb and front cover illustration from a painting of Bixby Canyon by Emil White. A little wear to spine ends and tips, extremities a touch rubbed, two marks to head of front board and "oneway" scratched onto the front illustration, pointing along the bridge, "shore cuts" scratched along the shore, inner hinges cracked but firm, a touch of soiling to margins, not affecting text.
