The story of Africa-America April, "tall, lean, black, broadshouldered", "a man among men", named by his grandmother for the lucky month of April at a moment of rising tide, and in captivity of slavery. Written in the Gullah dialect (a unique blend of Creole and African dialects with an English base), the dialogues capture rich vitality of language ("I ain' use to shoes an' dey hinders my feet in dis sand"). First 1927; this is the First Edition of Grosset & Dunlap,1928. First novel of Julia Peterkin (1880 - 1961). Poignant portrait of daily life and folk beliefs of the Gullah African-American of the South Carolina coast and nearby islands. Julia Peterkin received the Pulitzer Prize for Scarlet Sister, 1928.
