About This Item
London: Secker and Warburg, 1962. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (London: Secker & Warburg, 1962). [Wartime memoir]. First UK Edition. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Yellow top-edge. A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper price-clipped to the inside flap and with one tiny dot to the right-hand edge of the front panel. Sefton Delmer and Ian Fleming met in Moscow in the 1930's and worked together in Naval Intelligence during WW2. Delmer was recruited by the Political Warfare Executive (PWE) to organise black propaganda broadcasts to Nazi Germany as part of a psychological warfare campaign. Fleming worked closely with the PWE as liaison officer for Naval Intelligence. After the war, Delmer became Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent at the Daily Express and Fleming joined The Sunday Times as Foreign Manager. NB: Fleming was the godfather of Delmer's son Felix, whose Christian name was appropriated for use as James Bond's American partner (Felix Leiter). Inexplicably uncommon and a very nice copy indeed. "World War II espionage and propaganda stories are just about the richest in history and Sefton Delmer's book is a welcome and valuable addition to such literature. Delmer, a German expert, writing for British newspapers, conceived the idea of a 'Black Radio' in 1941 to confuse and undermine the Germans in Europe. Its broadcasts reached German soldiers in the field, U-boat crews at sea, and civilians in Germany itself. A really fascinating study in politics and propaganda" (Kirkus Reviews). Photographs/scans available upon request.
