About This Item

Seattle: Students of West Seattle High School, 1929. First Edition. Printed Wrappers. Very Good-. 8vo. Pp. 127, [1]. Laden with photos of students, faculty and activities. With signatures and inscriptions from many students, as usual. Bound in textured wraps with yapped edges, "Blue and Gold 1929" embossed on front cover. Light edge-wear. With three commendations for the former owner laid in (no absences, two for music achievement). Contains a photo of sophomore Frances Farmer among the group of Debate Club members. Farmer entered the University of Washington after winning a national essay contest while at West Seattle High School. Her essay, "God Dies," was influenced by her precocious interest in Nietzche. She performed in several University of Washington plays under the tutelage of Drama Dept. head Glenn Hughes. (Hughes would later appear in the 1950s episode of "This is Your Life" that was devoted to Farmer.) His influence was edifying: Upon graduation Farmer embarked for New York, where she became involved with Clifford Odets and his Group Theatre. Scarce piece of Farmerana,
