About This Item
London: Printed by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode , c1860. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 5" by 3.5". Not Stated. A small, handsomely bound book of common prayer, enclosed in a leather-bound chemise. A mid-19th century edition of this work, finely bound with a morocco spine and ivorine boards, edged with a lacquered brass trim, and decorated to the front board with pictorial gilt. Brass trim suggests a previous removal of a now absent clasp. All edges gilt, with moire silk end papers. Accompanied by a full calf chemise with a brass clasp, lined with cream silk. Bourgeois 32mo. to the bottom of the title page. A Book of Common Prayer and administration of the Sacraments, and other rites and ceremonies of the Church, according to the use of the United Church of England and Ireland. Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, as they are to be sung or said in churches, and the form and manner of making, ordaining, and consecrating of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons.Undated, dated through copies held at the National Trust Libraries. In a quarter morocco and ivorine binding, with a full calf chemise. Externally, very smart, with just a little loss to the red colour to the front board. Gilt remains bright. Lacking brass clasp to the book. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for a scattering of spots to the first and last couple of pages. Chemise is sound, though a little rubbed, and leather is split to the front joint. Front hinge is reasonably firm. Losses and a split to the leather of the flap holding one side of the clasp. Leather which is attached to the clasp on this side is tender. The leather to the other flap appears very smart, but there are tears to the silk of the lining. The silk, which is a little soiled, is lifting to the edges of the lining in a couple of places, and may tear upon further handling. Very Good Indeed
