De 22,4x14,3 cm. Com vii, 98 págs. Brochado.

Illustrated with a fold-out engraving depicting how slaves were transported on ships.

The engraving refers to a transport of two hundred and ninety-two people: 85 children, 83 women and 124 men, side by side, in the hold of a ship. In the representation, everyone is lying down and the bodies occupy as many spaces as possible with the separation of people into three groups by age and sex.

A copy of this engraving was part of the exhibition - Testimonies of Slavery, which ran from 1 January to 29 April 2017 at the BNP (Portuguese National Library).

Copy with loose paperback covers.

The preliminary pages contain a warning and the chapter index.

Very rare work, which is not mentioned by Inocêncio or the major booksellers" and auction catalogues.

Very important for the study of the slave trade in the 19th Century and the conflicts between Portugal and England due to this trade.

About Livraria Castro e SIlva

Founded in 1957, by Ezequiel Castro e Silva, LIVRARIA CASTRO E SILVA is a bibliographic commercial organization, well known in the antique book market and amongst the antiquarian booksellers, both in Portugal and abroad, for being one of the most distinguished Portuguese specialists in its area, dealing in books through several continents. We seek to maintain a family tradition that goes back to the second decade of the last century. Our main activity is the edition and periodic publication of bibliographic catalogues.

Aiming to provide faster access to our catalogues, better stock information and improving communication with our clients, in 2003 we launched our website www.castroesilva.com, allowing all interested parts an easier access to registration and order of our catalogues. This webpage has a bibliographical database which seeks to replace the old file system, in itself an historical and probably unique tool, while allowing us the means to spread information about our books and contributing to the general bibliographical research.

We are convinced that personal contact should always be privileged so all interested parts can visit us at our shop, where those seeking rare, antique books, for collecting or studying can find and examine them in the private quiet environment such activity requires.
