About This Item

This is an early edition of "THE BOTANICAL TEXT-BOOK" - An Introduction to Scientific Botany, Both Structural and Systematic by Asa Gray. 1850 3rd edition (stated); George P. Putnam; New York. Profusely illustrated with 1,200 wood engravings. There is a gilt illustration of a potted flower on the front cover.

The contents are grouped as follows: PART I - STRUCTURAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL BOTANY: General Survey of the Science; Of the Elementary Structure of Plants; Of the General Morphology of the Plant; Of the Root or Descending Axis; Of the Stem or Ascending Axis; Of the Leaves; Of the Food and Nutrition of Plants; Of Flowering and its Consequences; Of the Inflorescence; Of the Flower; Of the Fruit; Of the Seed; Of the Spontaneous Movements Which Plants Exhibit. PART II - SYSTEMATIC BOTANY: Of Classification and its Principles; Of the Artificial System of Linnaeus; Of the Natural System; Illustrations of the Natural Orders.

Condition:
The gilt flower illustration on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine have dulled a bit; light soiling to the covers, heavier on the spine. Cloth tears at the corner tips of the covers, as well at at the top and bottom edges of the spine (there is also a strip of cloth missing at the bottom of the spine). Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages present well and are mostly clean with only an occasional pencil marking/notation in old handwriting to a small number of pages; pages 30/31 and 198/199 have tanned outlines at the inner edge by the spine, presumably from slips of paper that had been left between them. Overall the book is in Good+ condition.
