New York, NY: Sutra Translation Committee Of The United States And Canada. Near Fine. 1994. 1st Edition USA. Paperback. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the hint of a crease to the lower front corner tip and an even fainter indentation near the upper rear corner, probably due to being carelessly stacked in a pile of books; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creases to the backstrip. Free of any creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome, nearly-new copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing the mildest wear and minor, unobtrusive imperfections. Bright and clean. Corners sharp. Very close to "As New". NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8.25 x 6 x 0.75 inches). 363pp. Extensive Notes, Glossary, Bibliography, Index. Translated and Edited by the Van Hien Study Group. Language: English. Weight: 16 ounces. This translation has also been published under the title 'Horizontal Escape', and is based upon the Fifth Vietnamese Edition (1994) , first published in 1991. Paperback. There is unfortunately very little available on Pure Land Buddhism in English. That's a shame. Because Pure Land Buddhism is the larges school throughout East Asia - and a spiritual tradition that has much to offer to the west. This dharma text is in the tradition of the Avatamsaka Sutra (which Zen-master D. T. Suzuki described as the epitome of Buddhist thought, sentiment and experience) , the author sometimes shifts from one plane of meaning to another, at times down-to-earth, at times metaphysical, so as to reach readers at every level and to sever attachment to his very words. It is in this light that certain paradoxes already familiar to students of Zen (illusory but not non-existant, recitation with no thought of recitation, etc. ) should be viewed and understood. This book is a great - and practical - overview of the tradition as it's practiced in China and Vietnam. Of great value both to practitioners and to interested readers who want to gain insight into Pure Land Buddhist teachings. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 363 pages .
