A lovely limited edition collection of the autobiographical essays of English novelist Samuel Butler, best known for 'The Way of All Flesh', and 'Erewhon'. Number ninety of eight-hundred copies of this work produced.Illustrated with eight plates. Collated, complete.This work includes seven essays, a selection of previously unpublished papers from the six volumes of manuscript left by Butler at his death. With a preface and bio-bibliographical statement by A.T. Bartholomew. With the pencil inscription of British writer and architectural conservationist Billa Harrod to the front free endpaper. Harrod married economist Sir Roy Harrod, though in the early 1930s was briefly engaged to poet Sir John Betjeman. A former owner has written 'Betjeman's friend + 'almost'' to the front free endpaper, below her inscription. In the publisher's original calf backed paper covered boards. Light rubbing to spine head and tail and joints, with boards exceptionally bright. Minor loss of calf to head of front joint. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good Indeed

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
