Paris: Calmann-Levy, 1907. First edition. Bound in burgundy half leather, with gilt titles and 6 raised bands. marbled boards. Marbled end papers. The original wrappers are bound in to the front and rear. The leather has a little rubbing to it, with very slight cracking to the front hinge. A little foxing to the end papers. The original covers are beautiful clean examples. The rest of the book is clean and tidy. Engraved frontis of Benjamin Constant aged six years. This copy is on Hollande paper. 130 pages. Benjamin Constant, was a Swiss-French political activist and writer on political theory and religion. First posthumous edition of this autoboiography. Benjamin Constant talks about his studies at the University of Edinburgh, where he met the British philosopher and politician James Mackintosh, as well as the Scottish historian Malcolm Laing. He mentions his stays in Paris with the couple of writers Amélie and Jean Baptiste Antoine Suard, his brief meeting with the future wife of Emmanuel de Pastoret, and details the beginnings of his relationship with Isabelle de Charrière. Louise de Constant de Rebecque, sister of Benjamin Constant 195 by 145mm (7¾ by 5¾ inches). Première édition. Reliure demi cuir bordeaux, avec titres dorés et 6 nerfs. planches marbrées. Feuilles de garde marbrées. Les emballages d'origine sont liés à l'avant et à l'arrière. Le cuir a un peu de frottement, avec de très légères fissures sur la charnière avant. Petites rousseurs sur les pages de garde. Les couvertures originales sont de beaux exemples propres. Le reste du livre est propre et bien rangé. Frontis gravé de Benjamin Constant âgé de six ans. Cet exemplaire est sur papier Hollande. 130 pages. Benjamin Constant, était un militant politique franco-suisse et écrivain sur la théorie politique et la religion. 195 by 145mm (7¾ by 5¾ inches).
