Research remains to be done to determine the identity of the artist and the date of the art work itself. The text on the back of the scroll at the top is in Japanese. One translation of this text provided to me is that this line of text includes the term "Hodoka", suggesting that the calligraphy is in the format of a traditional poem called a "Tanka" and contains a moral teaching about the spirit of Buddha.
