About This Item

London: Printed by Luke Hansard, 1800. In two volumes. [2], 171, [1]; [2], 169pp, [3]. With an engraved frontispiece to both volumes, a further seven engraved plates, and a final leaf of publisher's advertisements to Vol. II. Contemporary gilt-ruled straight-grain navy morocco, A.E.G. A trifle rubbed. Marbled endpapers, recent book-labels of John Sparrow to verso of both FFEPs, foxed. A handsomely bound copy of a two-volume edition of playwright and novelist Richard Cumberland's (1732-1811) most ambitious poetic effort, a religious epic first published in 1792. Nathan Drake (1766-1836), essayist and physician, devoted four essays of his Literary Hours to a discussion of Calvary, describing the poem as 'a work imbued with the genuine spirit of Milton', concluding 'that to no author of the eighteenth century in polite literature are we under greater obligations'. Drake's praise of the poem was responsible for the publication of seven editions of it between 1800 and 1811. ESTC T141106.. New edition. 8vo.

Terms of Sale

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
