Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. Published 1862, 1863 printed on title page. GOOD+. A clean, firmly bound copy. The only marking is previous owner's (George Walton Ogden) custom bookplate on front pasted endpaper and neatly penned on first blank leaf. Pages are clean and supple, front edge lightly stained, otherwise fine. Bound in hardcover of brown paper with blind embossed design to all panels. The spine was originally gilt titled but due to a large chip from top of spine and dulling of remaining type, the title is no longer legible. The cover is clean though moderately edgeworn; front hinge has 1" crack at top and rear hinge a 1" crack at bottom. Despite the cracks, hinges remain firm and the book block is tight. This "novelized memoir" of the author's travels through the Pacific Northwest (California to British Columbia). Included in this volume is a 4-page partial vocabulary of the Chinook Jargon. The work was published posthumously, for Major Winthrop (1828-1861) was one of the first Union officers killed in the Civil War. The second work, "Isthmiana," was a sketch found among Winthrop's papers, a rapidly written journal of his travels in the Isthmus of Panama. 4-1/2 x 7-1/4"; 375 pages plus 1-page ad for other Winthrop titles at front of book and 16-pages of publisher ads at the end. . Hard Cover. Good+/No Jacket.

It presents a truthful contemporary picture of the Indian and pioneer period. Included is a vocabulary of the Chinok Jargon, and numerous sketches of Indians and Indian life, etc." Free front end paper excised, ownerÕs notes on one prelim. & occasional spotting in text o/w a very good copy in blue boards with all edges gilt
