About This Item

London: John Camden Hotten, 1867. Cloth. Good Only. 8" by 5.5". Thomas Wright. A first edition caricature history of the House of Hanover, left to an illustrator of periodicals by Tom Hood, editor of 'Fun' magazine, upon his untimely death. The comic history of the House of Hanover, compiled from pictorial caricatures of their era.A fascinating presentation copy. Left to J. Gordon Thomson as the last request of Tom Hood, dated December 14, 1874. Inscribed by Henry Sampson.Tom Hood (1835-1874) was the son of humourist and poet Thomas Hood and an important editor of comic periodicals in his own right, appointed editor of Fun in 1865. He died suddenly on the 20th November 1874.Inscribed as such by Henry Sampson (1841-1891), a newspaper proprietor and contributor to Fun magazine; he acted as sub-editor when Tom Hood fell ill, and continued this role until 1878.John Gordon Thomson (1841-1911) was illustrator for Fun between1870 and 1893. He also illustrated Dickens' 'Pictures from Italy' and contributed to Fun magazine.Fun magazine was first published in 1861 in competition with Punch, and was a humorous periodical. It was sold to the brothers Dalziel in 1870.Richly illustrated throughout with four hundred illustrations on steel and wood. Including a loose frontispiece in colour.Undated; dated from copies held on Jisc. The first edition thus: this work was originally published as 'England under the House of Hanover' in 1848.A lovely association copy of this caricature history, from the heyday of Victorian journals. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart; spine is a little cockled, with some slight wear to the head and tail. Inscribed to the title page. Internally, binding is a little tender; frontispiece is loose and front hinge is starting but still relatively firm. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd tidemark and spot. Good Only
