About This Item

Layton, Utah: Peregrine Smith Books, 1986. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 34 color plates, with 82 illustrations. Pictorial biography of western artist Carl Oscar Borg (1879-1947) who, after emigrating from his native Sweden in 1899, settled in Los Angeles in 1903 where he painted scenery for films, had his first exhibition in 1905, and attracted the attention of Southern California's cultural lions, including Charles Lummis and Phoebe Apperson Hearst, who sponsored him for five years of European study. Versatile in many media, including oil painting, watercolor, dyepoint copper etching, and engraving, Borg excelled as a painter of cowboy genre subjects and Indian ceremonials. Inscribed by Laird of the front flyleaf, with a handwritten postcard from Laird laid in. Original green cloth binding, with black titles. Some mild edgewear to the dust jacket; otherwise a near fine copy. Inscribed by Author.
