About This Item
BOSTON: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1879 VERY GOOD CONDITION, GREEN COVER WUTH DESIGN ON FRONT, A MODERN CLASSIC, FRONTISPIECE PICTURE OF OLIVER CROMWELL. NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE TALES INCLUDED ARE A VIRTUOSO'S COLLECTION, AND OTHER TALES, AND LEGENDS OF THE PROVINCE HOUSE. FORMER OWNER NAME IN FRONT WITH DATE, LIGHT BROWNING ON EDGE OF PAGES, TIGHT BINDING, GREAT SHAPE. Cromwell, Oliver (1599-1658), soldier and statesman, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth (1653-8). He began his career as a Member of the Long Parliament for Cambridge who returned to his native county when the English civil war broke out to raise a troop of horse against the king (see British civil wars). Until then his career had provided little clue of the greatness to come. A gentleman of modest means he had, around 1630, undergone a Calvinist conversion experience which transformed his life. Hawthorne, Nathaniel (1804¿64), American man of letters, and author of two retellings of Greek legends for children, A Wonder¿Book for Girls and Boys (1852), and Tanglewood Tales for Girls and Boys (1853). The first set of stories is told against a background of the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts where Hawthorne was living at the time. Both books reflect an idealized American domesticity rather than the savagery of the original legends. WONDERFUL COLLECTOR ITEM. 1776 BOOKSTORE, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.
